What Is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a communication difficulty that affects a person's ability to speak, understand language, read, and write. It is most commonly caused by a stroke, but it can also occur following a brain injury, brain tumour, or other neurological conditions.

At Kent Neuro Therapy, I provide specialist assessment and therapy for adults with aphasia across Kent. My aim is to help individuals regain confidence in their communication, participate more fully in everyday life, and achieve goals that are meaningful to them.

Aphasia affects everyone differently. Some people may find it difficult to find the right words when speaking, while others may have difficulty understanding conversations, reading information, or writing messages.

Common signs of aphasia include:

Importantly, aphasia affects language rather than intelligence. People with aphasia often know exactly what they want to say but find it difficult to express it.

How Speech and Language Therapy Can Help

Therapy is tailored to each individual's strengths, challenges, and personal goals. Together, we identify the communication activities that matter most and develop practical strategies to support improvement.

Therapy may focus on:

Who Can Benefit?

Aphasia therapy may be helpful for adults who have experienced:

Support is available whether communication difficulties are recent or have been present for many years.

Family and Carer Support

Communication difficulties affect the whole family. I work closely with partners, relatives, and carers to provide practical advice and strategies that can make conversations easier and less stressful. By adapting communication approaches, families can often improve understanding, reduce frustration, and increase confidence for everyone involved.

Assessment and Therapy

The process typically begins with a comprehensive assessment to understand current communication abilities, challenges, and goals. Following assessment, a personalised therapy plan is developed based on individual needs.

Therapy can be provided in the client's home, in some cases online, or in other appropriate settings depending on goals and preferences (for example practising conversation in busier places such as cafes).
